High-velocity Clouds in M 83 and M 51

چکیده

Various scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of the Galactic high-velocity clouds, predicting different distances and implying widely varying properties for the Galaxy’s gaseous halo. To eliminate the difficulties of studying the Galactic halo from within, we have embarked on a program to study anomalous neutral gas in external galaxies, and here we present the results for two nearby, face-on spiral galaxies, M 83 and M 51. Significant amounts of anomalous-velocity H I are detected in deep VLA 21-cm observations, including an extended, slowly rotating disk and several discrete H I clouds. Our detection algorithm reaches a limiting H I source mass of 7×10 M⊙, and it allows for detailed statistical analysis of the false detection rate. We use this to place limits on the HVC mass distributions in these galaxies and the Milky Way; if the HVC populations are similar, then the Galactocentric HVC distances must be less than about 25 kpc.

High - Velocity Clouds in the Nearby Spiral Galaxy M 83

We present deep H I 21-cm and optical observations of the face-on spiral galaxy M 83 obtained as part of a project to search for high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in nearby galaxies. Anomalous-velocity neutral gas is detected toward M 83, with 5.6×10 M⊙ of H I contained in a disk rotating 40–50 km s more slowly in projection than the bulk of the gas. We interpret this as a vertically extended thick d...

Anomalous-velocity neutral gas is detected toward M 83, with 5.6 × 107 M of H i contained in a disk rotating 40–50 km s−1 more slowly in projection than the bulk of the gas. We interpret this as a vertically extended thi...

A Numerical Study of Dynamic Detonability Characteristics of Two-phase Unconfined Fuel-Air Clouds

A numerical simulation has been carried out to study the detonability characteristics of two- phase unconfined clouds. The parameters equivalence ratio, turbulence, shape, volume and uniformity of the cloud and the delay time distribution are recognized and introduced as the most important factors determining the reactivity of the cloud and influencing the initiation of a successful detonation....

Neutral Hydrogen and the Missing Satellites of the Local Group

We present a comparison of the leftover satellites at z=0 in a cold dark matter dominated simulation of the formation of the Local Group to the distribution of observed neutral hydrogen high-velocity clouds and compact high-velocity clouds. The ∼2000 leftover satellites in the simulation have dark matter masses which range between 0.5 to 10 × 10 9 M ⊙ , sizes between 3 to 30 kpc, and distances ...

Identification of molecular complexes in M 81

We report about high spatial resolution observations made with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer of the 12CO(J = 1 → 0) emission from a 1.1 × 1.1 kpc plane-of-sky field on a spiral arm of Messier 81. With a beam of 5′′ ≈ 90 pc, we identify 6 giant molecular cloud complexes with virial masses of ≈ 106 M , including one associated with a giant HII region. The deduced N (H2)/ICO ratios are a...
